These various urban mappings look into an area of Nashville known as the Gulch that has been on the higher-end of the city for a few decades now. These three drawings are primarily an analysis over different schema through the use of ArcGIS and other software, as well as field analysis, seeking to ask larger questions and hypothesize reasons for why the Gulch is the way it is; or even what it can become.
The initial image above looks into foot traffic density and overall noise that is heavy within the Gulch. The map highlights our site analysis that we tracked on foot to various locations to get a feel for how noisy the areas were and what could be the cause, which was primarily construction. Decibel readings were also taken and tracked as to get accurate readings before taking into account our own personal opinions over sound quality.
The first image below sees an analysis of how new the Gulch is. The area of the Gulch used to be a dilapidated train yard that was in disarray and it wasn’t until MarketStreet in the early 2000s bought out much of the property and began to push for newer buildings and greater quality of life. MarketStreet is the primary owner of much of the major construction in the Gulch and are the primary components for why the Gulch is what is it is today. The map is mostly showcasing the new buildings coming in and how vast the property has changed.
Finally, the last image is a higher defined construction of MarketStreet structures, with most of the major pathways in the Gulch being MarketStreet properties.
